Radiation risks and benefits in pediatric radiology: from basic concept to clinical practice
05. Juni 2019 in Berlin
ab 18:00 bis 20:30 Uhr
There has been a great concern in recent years about the risks of damaging effects due to ionizing radiation in pediatric patients. The number of radiological exams has increased dramatically, and new types of complex radiographic procedures have arisen in diagnostic applications. Consequently, there has been a large increase in the dose received by the patients. In the pediatric case some tissues are more sensitive to radiation and are more subject to specific diseases in children. Because of their longer life expectancy, they have more chance to develop radiation-induced neoplasm. The proportion of the relationship of the pediatric dose amount and risk is somewhat uncertain, but it is a matter of considerable concern. The aim of this presentation is: 1) to report the current state of the art in the world, 2) to present some basic concepts used in pediatric radiology, 3) to describe the particularities of a pediatric imaging center, 4) to present the pediatric Pequeno Principe Hospital in Curitiba, Brazil and 4) to present results of recent studies on dose measurements and radiological protection in the hospital.
